Nice To Meet You
State of Maine HIV Prevention Program History
In 1984, the first cases of AIDS were diagnosed in Maine. As a response to these cases, the state created the Office of AIDS. Now known as the HIV, STD and Viral Hepatitis Program, the program provides HIV prevention and care services to thousands of Mainers across the State. The program, a division of the Maine Center for Disease Control, receives federal and state funds to support its programs. The program also works with several community partners to help ensure access to programming.
Our goal now, as it was in the beginning, continues to be stopping the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, viral hepatitis and HIV, to reduce illness and death, and to promote the health and well-being of people with, or at risk for these diseases.
